The new Brookwood Women’s Medical Center looks more like a hotel than a hospital, it’s not by accident, administrators say.
The four-story hospital on the Brookwood campus, which opens today, includes one water-birth suite, four operating rooms for Caesarean deliveries,19 labor and delivery rooms and 42 private mother-and-baby rooms. And there are two nurseries to accommodate babies at a facility expected to deliver about 3,700 a year. There are 29 private neonatal intensive care rooms in an ICU that at 30,000 square feet is six times bigger than the one it replaces.
The facility has granite accents on the walls and includes water features in the lobbies. In the waiting rooms and private patient rooms there are fireplaces, flat screen televisions and wireless internet.
“These patients aren’t sick,” Brookwood Medical Center Chief Executive Garry Gause said. “This is a natural, wonderful life event. This design says we’re looking through the patients’ eyes.”
